Adding new figure elements

Figure elements in Hard Times are the sprites which compose a character figure in game. A figure is composed of the following elements:

  • Hair sprite
  • Body and Head sprites
  • Breast sprite
  • Beard sprite

It's very easy to add new figure elements to the game, since they don't need any configuration file. The only thing to keep in mind is to respect the images properties, being a png of 64x64px, and placing the sprite in the right spot to fit it exactly where it should fit on the sprite. The best way to achieve this, in my personal experience, is to use layers in your graphic software and place an existing sprite character figure under your new sprite to arrange it tightly in the right spot. Use such a file like a template for all of your new elements. Trial and error will make your technique perfect!

First thing create a figure folder in your new mod. It should be in:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure

Then we have to add the figuresFolder to the descriptor file of the mod to let it know it has to load figures in this mod

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Descriptor.json
{
  "modName": "MyMod_MODPKG",
  "author": "RadicalFiction",
  "gameVersion": "",
  "langFolder": "Lang",
  "itemsFolder": "Items",
  "shopsFolder": "Shops",
  "spawnersFolder": "Spawners",
  "figuresFolder": "Figure"
}

Next step create the hair folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Hair

thene all we need to do is to place in the folder a new hair style sprite, so that the game will load it along the others at start up: Just right click on the image above and select “save image as” to save it in:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Hair\red_mohawk.png

And you're done! Your new hair style will show up in the game at your next startup.
Now you should be able to select your new hair style in the new game character creation panel: Also you will encounter random people sporting your new figure element:

Adding beards is similar to adding hair styles. Just put your sprites in the correct beards folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Beard

This thing done all we need to do is to place in the folder a new beard style sprite, so that the game will load it along the others at start up: Just right click on the image above and select “save image as” to save it in:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Beard\blue_beard.png

And you're done! Your new hair style will show up in the game at your next startup: Note that beards have that tiny mouth sprite in it. It will be useful for alignment of the sprite!

In Hard Times bodies and heads just work together to create a naked character. You basically colour them to create skin tones, or you could experiment in modifying the shape of bodies and heads to create monsters.
In this guide we will just create a new skin tone and we will add it to the game. Remember that the game will load the sprite files in alphabetical order. To ensure that the correct body will be matched against the correct head you should use exactly the same names for corriponding head and body files. In the Vanilla game they are named by number. Just create the body folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Body

and then the heads folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Head

Now place this file: in the bodies folder as:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Body\00_mymod.png

Then do the same with this file: in the heads folder as:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\LocalLow\RadicalFiction\HARDTIMES\Mods\MyMod_MODPKG\Figure\Head\00_mymod.png

Now just restart the game and you will find your alien skin tone in the character creation panel as you start a new game. You will also meet strange blue looking people wandering the streets: [Zombie Mod?]

In future patches you will be able to modify also the shape of character breast. It's now locked and will need some work to be properly released. I'm sorry for the delay :P
